Delta Is Three Communities, Not One Place

Delta is unusual among the cities we work in. It is not one settlement with suburbs, and the City of Delta does not describe it that way: its own site says Delta “has grown into three thriving communities: Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta”, and lists exactly those three under Our Communities.
The city is also mostly rural, so the built up parts sit apart from one another with farmland in between, and Burns Bog takes up a large part of the middle. Ladner and Tsawwassen together are known as South Delta. All of which matters for a quote, because “a bed in Delta” describes three fairly different situations.

Ladner

A 19th century fishing village on the south arm of the Fraser, with the oldest gardens in the city and beds that are usually long since established. Most of the work here is an existing bed rather than a new one.

Tsawwassen

The closest part of Delta to open water, running from the Boundary Bay shoreline up onto English Bluff. Exposure changes noticeably inside the one community, which is the next section.

North Delta

The most populous of the three and the most suburban, on the north east side against Burns Bog and the Surrey boundary. Sheltered compared with the two southern communities.

We work in all three. When you call it is worth saying which one you are in, because it tells us more about the job than the size of the bed does.

The Beds Nearest the Water Take the Weather

Delta has more coast than anywhere else we work. The city is bordered by the Fraser River along the north, Boundary Bay to the south and the Strait of Georgia to the west, and in Tsawwassen the houses run right down to the shoreline.
A bed that faces open water behaves differently from a bed in the middle of a North Delta subdivision with houses and fences on every side. Not because of the soil, but because loose material on an exposed surface does not stay loose for long. The first week after an installation is when it is most vulnerable, before the layer has settled and knitted down onto the soil.
So on an exposed bed we water the mulch in rather than leaving it dry and fluffy on top, and we finish the bed against a clean edge so there is something for it to sit behind. What we do not do is lay it deeper to compensate. Depth is set by the bed and is covered on the main bark mulch page, and which materials hold together and which come apart is on the Burnaby mulch page.

What Is Included, and What Goes Elsewhere

What goes to someone else. A bed that sits under water for part of the winter is not fixed by mulch, and we will say so rather than sell you a load that will rot down and sour. Drainage is a separate trade. We do not lay landscape fabric under mulch, and the longer explanation is on the Maple Ridge mulch page.

Choosing between the grades, and working out how many yards a bed needs, are both on the main bark mulch page. Low and wet beds have their own page at Pitt Meadows mulch. New beds from scratch are garden bed installation, and a seasonal clear before mulching is spring cleanup.

Bark Mulch Across Delta

The village streets and older gardens through Ladner, the beds running down toward Boundary Bay and up onto English Bluff in Tsawwassen, and the subdivisions of North Delta between Burns Bog and the Surrey boundary. Three communities, one crew, and a quote that says which of them it was written for.
Mulch in neighbouring cities is on the Richmond, Burnaby, Surrey, Maple Ridge and Abbotsford pages, and our areas served page covers the whole service area.

Delta Bark Mulch Questions

Yes. Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta are all in the service area, and so are the smaller pockets of housing in between. Mention which one you are in when you ring and the quote can account for it.

In one respect that matters. Tsawwassen runs down to the Boundary Bay shoreline and up onto English Bluff, so a lot of its beds face open water, while most North Delta beds sit inside a subdivision with houses and fences around them. An exposed bed needs watering in properly so the layer settles instead of sitting dry on top.

No. Extra depth is not what keeps mulch in place and it causes its own problems. We set depth from the bed itself, which is explained on our main bark mulch page, and put the effort into settling the layer and cutting a clean edge for it to sit behind.

That is a longer answer than this page should give, and it is set out grade by grade on our main bark mulch page. If material has been moving off your beds, ask us which grades hold together and which come apart.

Both, and they can be booked separately. The beds are measured before anything is ordered so you are not left with a pile on the drive. The two options are set out on our main bark mulch page.

Bulk mulch has to be ordered and brought in, so a few days of notice is normal. Ring and we will give you a date when we quote, not afterwards.

Not as a fix. Bark laid over ground that stays saturated will break down and turn sour instead of helping, and what needs solving is the drainage, which is a different trade. Low and wet beds are covered on our Pitt Meadows mulch page.

No, we leave it out, and there is a full explanation of the reasoning on our Maple Ridge mulch page.
