Richmond Has No Slope, and That Helps

Almost everything written about bark mulch is really about keeping it in place. Our Burnaby mulch page exists because that city tilts, and material that will not knit together ends up at the bottom of the bed by March.
Richmond is the opposite case, and it is worth saying plainly: this is the flattest ground we work on. The city sits on the islands of the Fraser estuary, barely above the water, and there is no hill anywhere in it. Whatever else you have to think about in a Richmond garden, mulch sliding downhill is not on the list.

Nothing migrates

Laid level, mulch stays level. There is no top of the bed going bare and no pile building at the bottom, so the depth you pay for in spring is still the depth you have in autumn.

Topping up means it broke down

So when a Richmond bed looks thin, the question is age rather than movement. Bark composts down into the soil, which is the point of it, and the interval is set by that rather than by weather.

Water sits instead of running

The other side of flat ground. Rain does not sheet off a Richmond bed, so a bed that is already slow to drain will stay wet under mulch. Worth a look before we quote.

Which changes the conversation rather than ending it. How thick to lay it, and how many yards that comes to, are set out on the main bark mulch page. And if a bed holds water for weeks at a time, that is a drainage question before it is a mulch one.

An Island City, Bounded by the River

Richmond takes up almost the whole of Lulu Island, along with Sea Island and a scatter of smaller ones in the estuary. The Fraser runs along the north and the south, the Strait of Georgia is off the west end, and the major islands are ringed by dykes.
For a garden that mostly shows up as consistency. There is no upland half of town behaving differently from the low half, which is the thing that makes several of our other city pages necessary. A bed in Seafair and a bed in Bridgeport are working with much the same ground.
Where Richmond does vary is what is built on it. Steveston at the south west corner is an old fishing port with established village gardens; Brighouse and Blundell are settled residential streets; east Richmond is given over to farmland; and Burkeville on Sea Island is a pocket of houses of its own. We work across all of it.

What We Cover, and What We Pass On

What we pass on. Drainage is the big one here. If a bed stands in water through the winter, a load of bark will rot down and sour rather than fix it, and putting that right is a different trade. We will say so rather than sell you the mulch. We also do not lay landscape fabric under mulch, and the reasoning is on the Maple Ridge mulch page.

Depth and how much a bed needs are on the main bark mulch page. Which grade to choose is in our bark mulch guide. Beds on a slope are the Burnaby mulch page, and ground that stays wet is the Pitt Meadows mulch page. New beds from scratch are garden bed installation, and a seasonal clear before mulching is spring cleanup.

Bark Mulch Across Richmond

Steveston and Seafair at the west end, the settled streets of Blundell, Broadmoor and Brighouse through the middle of Lulu Island, Thompson and Bridgeport to the north, Hamilton and the farmland of east Richmond, and Burkeville over on Sea Island. Flat ground throughout, and beds measured before anything is ordered.
Mulch in neighbouring cities is on the Langley, Delta, Surrey, Maple Ridge and Abbotsford pages, and our areas served page covers the whole service area.

Richmond Bark Mulch Questions

Far less than almost anywhere else we work, because there is no grade for it to move down. Laid at the right depth it stays put, which is not something we can say about a bed on a hillside.

In Richmond that is usually age rather than movement. Bark breaks down into the soil, which is what it is meant to do, and a top up restores the depth. On sloped ground the same symptom often means the material travelled instead, which is a different fix.

Only where a bed already drains slowly. Mulch sitting on ground that stays saturated will break down quickly and can sour, so we look at that before ordering rather than after. Beds that hold water through the winter need drainage work first.

All of Lulu Island, from Steveston and Seafair through Blundell, Broadmoor, Brighouse, Thompson and Bridgeport to Hamilton and east Richmond, plus Burkeville over on Sea Island.

We measure before anything is ordered, so there is no pile left over on the drive. The depth we work to and a way of estimating it yourself are both on our main bark mulch page.

Both, and they can be booked separately. The two options are set out on our main bark mulch page.

No. Mulch covers soil and slows it drying out; it does nothing about where water goes. If a bed floods, that is a drainage question and a different trade, and laying bark over it first tends to make the bed worse rather than better.

No, we leave it out, and there is a full explanation of the reasoning on our Maple Ridge mulch page.
