Burnaby Beds Are Often on a Grade

This is the one city in our area where the ground tilts more often than not. Capitol Hill and Burnaby Heights fall away toward the inlet, Burnaby Mountain does what its name says, and even the gentler ground around Deer Lake rolls enough to matter in a bed.
Burnaby also sits on the coast rather than up the valley, so the winters here are wetter than the ones the timing advice on our bark mulch page is written around. Sloped and wet is the combination that moves mulch, and it is why a bed that looked right in October can be bare at the top and piled at the bottom by March.
So on a graded bed we spend the time on two things: what the mulch is made of, and keeping the bottom edge able to hold what gravity sends it.

On a Slope It Is Texture, Not Size

The guidance you will read on this is genuinely contradictory, and the honest version is that particle size is the wrong thing to ask about. What decides whether mulch stays on a grade is whether the material locks together.

Fibrous bark knits together

Shredded, stringy bark tangles into a mat that holds itself on a slope. It is the least glamorous looking option in the yard and the one that stays where it is put.

Round nuggets roll

Nuggets look tidy in a photograph and behave like gravel on a tilt. The smaller and rounder they are, the further they travel in a heavy week of rain.

Very fine material washes

Anything close to a powder moves with the water rather than resisting it, and it is the first thing to end up on the path or down the drain.

One more thing that runs against instinct: do not lay it deeper on a slope to compensate. A thicker layer has more mass to slide and tends to move as a sheet. We keep a graded bed to the same depth as a flat one and put the effort into the edge instead.

What We Bring, and What We Refer

What we refer out. If a bank is steep enough that it needs holding rather than mulching, that is a retaining job and a different trade, and we will say so rather than sell you mulch that will not stay. Terracing is the same answer. We do not lay landscape fabric under mulch, and there is a longer explanation of why on the Maple Ridge mulch page.

Choosing between the grades, and working out how many yards a bed needs, are both on the main bark mulch page. New beds from scratch are garden bed installation, and a seasonal clear before mulching is spring cleanup.

North Burnaby and the streets climbing Capitol Hill and Burnaby Heights, the slopes under Burnaby Mountain, the flatter established gardens around Deer Lake, and the townhouse and low rise beds through Metrotown, Brentwood and Edmonds. The steeper the ground, the more the choice of material decides the result.
Mulch in neighbouring cities is on the Richmond, Delta, Surrey, Maple Ridge and Abbotsford pages, and our areas served page covers the whole service area.

Burnaby Bark Mulch Questions

Almost always the material rather than the installation. Round nuggets and very fine mulch both move on a grade. Fibrous shredded bark tangles into a mat and stays, and on a Burnaby slope that is usually the fix.

No, the reverse. Extra depth just gives the layer more weight to shift, and it tends to travel in one piece. Same thickness as you would use on the level, with the effort going into how the bottom of the bed is finished.

The colour makes no difference. The texture does, and several of the dyed products are nugget shaped, so ask about the shape rather than the shade.

Both, and the beds are measured before anything is ordered so you are not left with a pile on the drive. The options are set out on our main bark mulch page.

Usually, though it is worth mentioning the access when you call. Steep short driveways and lane only properties change how the material gets from the truck to the bed, and that affects the time rather than the price of the mulch.

Both work. Because the winters are wet here, an autumn layer takes the beating and a spring top up tidies what moved. The timing detail is on the main bark mulch page.

Not usefully. If soil is moving, the bank needs holding and that is a retaining job with a different contractor. Mulch on top of a failing slope just relocates.

No, we leave it out, and there is a full explanation of the reasoning on our Maple Ridge mulch page.
