Hedge Trimming in Maple Ridge, BC
Big hedges, long boundaries and properties the average mower crew will not take on. We cut, shape and reduce hedges right across Maple Ridge, from Hammond up to Silver Valley and out to Whonnock, and we take every branch with us.
Maple Ridge Is Harder on Hedges Than the Coast
The municipality runs from the river up into the foothills, and that changes the job in four ways worth knowing before you book anyone.
- More rain, faster regrowth. Sitting against the mountains means noticeably more rainfall than the western Lower Mainland. Hedges put on more growth per season here, so the same hedge needs cutting more often than an identical one in Delta.
- Longer runs. Lots are bigger and often semi rural. A boundary here is frequently tens of metres rather than a few panels, which makes access and haulage the real cost drivers, not the cutting.
- Sloped ground. Much of the municipality sits on grade. A hedge cut parallel to a slope looks wrong from the road, so the top has to be stepped level in sections instead of followed along the hill.
- Forest edge properties. Where gardens back onto the trees, hedges are older and taller, get browsed low down by deer, and have usually been left well past the size they were planted for.
Can an Overgrown Hedge Be Brought Back?
This is the question we get asked most in Maple Ridge, and the honest answer depends entirely on what is planted. It is worth knowing before you pay anyone to cut.
Cedar will not come back from bare wood
Cedar only shoots from green growth. Cut into the brown interior and that face stays brown permanently. A very overgrown cedar hedge can often be narrowed, but it has to be done across two or three seasons, taking one face at a time and letting it green up before the next.
Laurel, holly and boxwood usually can
These will break from old wood, so a hedge that has doubled its intended size can be taken down hard and will refurnish. It looks bare for a season, which is worth knowing going in, and it is best done in stages if the hedge is your only screening.
What We Will Tell You Straight
If a hedge cannot be recovered we will say so rather than take the job and hand back a brown wall.
Sometimes the better answer is a staged reduction over two or three years. Sometimes it is replanting a section and screening it while it establishes.
Either way you get told before the first cut, not after.
Set Up for Big Properties
A long rural boundary is a different job from a suburban front hedge, and most of the difference is in what happens to the material.
- We chip on site where it makes sense. On a long run the volume coming off is substantial, and chipping beats forty trips to the truck with a tarp.
- Height without damage. Tall hedges get cut from platforms and poles rather than by leaning ladders against the plant, which is how the top of a hedge gets flattened.
- A string line on long runs. Over tens of metres the eye drifts, and a hedge that wanders is obvious from the road for years.
- Stepped tops on slopes. Level sections that stay level, rather than a cut that follows the ground and looks like it is sliding downhill.
- Wide at the base, narrower at the top. It lets light reach the bottom growth, which is what stops a tall hedge going bare underneath.
- Everything cleared. Chip taken away or left as mulch if you want it, beds raked out, drive blown clean.
When to Cut in Maple Ridge
Because growth is heavier here, two cuts a year is the baseline rather than the maximum. A vigorous laurel on a wet site can want three. Our guide covers how often hedges need cutting and what it costs in more detail.
June, once the spring push has firmed
Cutting while growth is still soft gives a line that disappears within weeks. Waiting until it has hardened means the shape holds into autumn.
September, before the weather turns
The cut that carries the hedge through winter. We stop well before the first frosts, because a late cut pushes soft growth that then gets damaged, and up here the cold arrives earlier than it does by the water.
Nesting Birds
Dense hedges on forest edge properties are prime nesting habitat, and active nests are protected in Canada.
We check before we start through the spring and summer window. If a section is in use we leave it and come back for that part once the birds have finished.
It is a good reason to get a summer cut booked rather than left.
What Drives the Price
We quote per property after walking it rather than publishing a rate, because on Maple Ridge lots these four things vary enormously from one address to the next.
Length and height
The two biggest drivers. Anything needing a platform rather than standing on the ground costs more to cut safely.
How long it has been
A hedge on a regular cycle is quick. One left for three years is a reduction job, not a trim.
Volume coming off
On a long run the material is most of the work. Chipping on site is usually cheaper than carting it whole.
Access
Whether we can get a truck and chipper to the hedge, or everything comes out through a garden gate by hand.
Where We Cut in Maple Ridge
- Hammond, Port Hammond and West Maple Ridge, older properties with established boundaries
- Albion and Cottonwood, newer streets where hedges planted at the same time all need the same work
- Silver Valley and Yennadon, forest edge lots with tall cedar and heavy shade
- Websters Corners, Whonnock and Ruskin, acreage with long runs and room for a chipper
Crews cover Pitt Meadows next door on the same runs. For everywhere else we reach, see the full hedge trimming service, and we handle tree pruning on the same visit where a hedge has grown into something taller than a hedge.
Hedge Trimming Questions
Twice a year for most, which is more than the coast needs because the extra rainfall drives heavier growth. A vigorous laurel on a wet site can want three cuts, and a slow boxwood can manage on one.
Usually, but not in one go. Cedar does not regrow from the brown interior, so taking a face back to bare wood leaves it bare for good. We narrow one face, let it green up over a season, then do the other. Two or three years for a badly overgrown run.
We work off platforms and pole equipment rather than ladders, so height is rarely the limit. If a hedge has really become a row of trees we will tell you, because at that point it is a tree pruning job and is quoted differently.
On longer runs, yes, and it usually works out cheaper than carting the material away whole. You can keep the chip as mulch if you want it, or we take it with us.
Yes. Long rural boundaries in Whonnock, Ruskin and Websters Corners are a regular part of what we do, and we are set up for the volume that comes off them.
Browsing leaves a bare band low down that trimming alone will not close. On species that break from old wood we can cut higher growth back to encourage the hedge to thicken lower. On cedar the realistic answer is usually underplanting or fencing the base while it recovers.
Aim for June, once the spring flush has hardened. Booking ahead matters here because the summer window is short and it is also when we work around nesting birds, which can move a job by a couple of weeks.
Yes. We maintain grounds for strata councils and commercial properties across the Fraser Valley on regular schedules, with the same crew each visit.
