BARK MULCH IN WHITE ROCK, BC

Bark Mulch Installation in White Rock, BC

Beds mulched across White Rock, from the hillside streets down toward the water. Mulch is there to hold moisture in the ground, and on lots this size the beds often run right up to the house, which is where that becomes worth thinking about.

Where the Mulch Should Stop

Most of what there is to say about bark mulch is about getting it onto the bed. The part nobody mentions is where to leave off, and on these lots that matters more than it does on an acre, because the beds are often the strip between the path and the wall.

Holding water is the whole point

A layer over a bed slows evaporation and keeps the ground underneath damp for longer. That is what you are paying for. It is also exactly what you do not want held against timber, and the material cannot tell the difference.

Damp timber is what rot wants

Wood decay fungi need sustained moisture in the wood before they can get established, and the parts of a house most at risk are the ones that stay wet. So we keep the layer back off siding and off the foot of a deck post rather than banking it up.

We are not surveying your house

If a wall already has a damp problem, that is a question for a building inspector and not for us, and we will not quote you a clearance in millimetres. Keeping mulch off the building is simply how we work, and you can ask us to keep it further back.

The same goes for where roof water lands. Water coming off a roof splashes back up off whatever it hits, so we leave the outlet of a downpipe clear and we do not bury the run it drains into. A bed that has swallowed its own drainage is a slow problem rather than an obvious one.

None of this makes a mulch job more expensive. It is a decision about where the last barrow stops, and it is worth making once rather than every spring.

What Moves In Underneath

A layer of anything on a damp bed is shelter, and things will use it. This is not a reason to skip mulching. It is a reason to be deliberate about how thick it goes and how close to the house it finishes.
Slugs shelter through the day in damp cover of exactly this kind, under bark, under logs, under anything sitting on soft ground, and they come out when it is wet or dark. Earwigs do much the same in small moist crevices and in loose debris, and they get blamed for a fair amount of ragged foliage. Neither is news, and neither is a disaster. A layer that thins out where it meets a path or a doorstep gives them a lot less to work with than one banked up against the wall.

Worth correcting one thing, because most people have it the wrong way round. Carpenter ants do not eat wood. They cannot digest it. They tunnel into it to nest, and what they look for is wood that is already dead and damp, which is why the places that get found are the ones that stay wet: around windows, under eaves, decks and porches. So the thing worth managing is not the mulch and it is not the ants. It is whether anything wooden is being kept wet.

What we do about it is plain enough. We keep the layer off the building, thinner at the edges, and clear of hard surfaces where it would only get walked out. We do not spray anything, we do not offer pest treatment, and if you think something is already nesting in the structure that is a call to make to someone qualified to look at it.

What a Mulch Job Here Includes

What goes elsewhere. We do not build retaining walls or lay paving, and planting design is not something we take on. Weed killer is not used at all, so whatever needs clearing is pulled by hand first.

We do not treat pests and we do not inspect buildings. Both come up on this page because they change where the material should stop, which is our decision to get right, and neither is a service we offer.

How the price is put together, which grade suits which bed, and whether you would rather we dropped a load and left you to it, are all on the main bark mulch page.

Bark Mulch Across White Rock

The hillside streets where the ground falls away toward Semiahmoo Bay, the flatter blocks in behind them, and the properties down around Marine Drive and West Beach. Small lots and a lot of frontage per square metre, which is why the tidy edge tends to matter here more than the volume does.
One practical note. White Rock is its own city and a small one, with Surrey around three sides of it, so plenty of addresses sit close to the line. It makes no difference to a bed of mulch. Bark mulch on the Surrey side is on the Surrey bark mulch page.
Bark mulch in neighbouring places is on the Delta, Tsawwassen and Langley pages, and our areas served page covers the whole service area.

White Rock Bark Mulch Questions

We finish it short of the siding, and short of the base of any post. The whole job of the stuff is to keep the ground underneath damp, which is right over a bed and wrong against timber. If you want an exact figure for your own house, that is a building inspector’s answer rather than ours.

Some will find it, yes. Anything damp and dark is somewhere to sit out the daylight hours, and a covered bed qualifies. A layer that tapers off where it meets a path or a step gives them much less to work with. We do not spray anything.

Neither, and this one is worth getting straight: carpenter ants do not eat wood at all, because they cannot digest it. They tunnel into wood that is already dead and damp in order to nest. So what deserves your attention is any timber that never gets a chance to dry out, rather than the bark on the bed.

We leave it clear. Roof water splashes back off whatever it lands on, and an outlet buried under a fresh layer stops being anyone’s problem right up until it is. Point them out when we quote if they are easy to miss.

That depends on the area and the shape of the beds, and we measure rather than guess. The main bark mulch page walks through the sums if you would rather have a figure in mind first.

There are six on the main bark mulch page with what each one suits. On small front beds that are seen close up, the finer grades usually look better for longer. Tell us what you are after and we will bring it.

Yes. It is its own city rather than a part of Surrey, and small enough that everything inside it is one run for us. If your address turns out to be on the Surrey side of the line we still come.

No. We are a landscaping crew, so pest treatment is not something we do or quote for. What we control is where the material goes.

No. Walls, paving and structural work go to a trade that does that properly. We will happily mulch the beds once they exist.
